Celebrating a Legacy of Service: Honoring Darlene Meixell

This fall, ICA is proud to present the Ron Kamps Legacy Volunteer Award to Darlene Meixell, whose nearly 30 years of service have left an indelible mark on our mission and community.

Since first stepping forward in 1995, Darlene has been a cornerstone of ICA’s work—driving clients to medical appointments, packing food, running congregational drives, and helping new families feel at home. She faithfully represented her congregation, Immaculate Heart of Mary, while also rolling up her sleeves for programs like Empty Bowls, The Great Taste, and countless community festivals. For over two decades, she spearheaded every ICA mailing, helping raise more than $1 million to support neighbors in need.

Beyond the visible impact of her work, Darlene has also been ICA’s “living memory.” She helped transition ICA into its current home at St. David’s, secured the first office equipment when resources were scarce, and guided new directors and staff with her wisdom and experience. Through it all, she reminded us not only where we’ve come from, but also why the mission matters.

When asked why she’s devoted so much of her life to ICA, Darlene is humble: “I think we all need to give back something. I knew there were people in need, and I could see ICA was helping. I didn’t do any of this by myself.”

Today, even as her health has changed, her eagerness to contribute remains unwavering. Her legacy is not just in the programs she helped build, but in the thousands of families whose lives have been touched by her care and commitment. “I’ve watched this place grow for thirty years, and it’s a lot different from packing four cans of soup at a time for clients.”

We are honored to celebrate Darlene’s lifetime of service at The Great Taste on October 21. Thank you, Darlene, for showing us what true community looks like.
