Support in All Forms: Kriana’s ICA Story

When Kriana moved to the Twin Cities from a small town near the Iowa border, she found herself starting over. With no friends, no nearby family, and limited resources, the transition felt overwhelming. Her family lives two hours away, and as a mother to a five-year-old and a newborn, she was carrying a lot on her own.

In September 2024, shortly after moving, Kriana found a flyer for the ICA Market at Gatewood Elementary and decided to reach out. That decision changed everything.

Through ICA, she connected with Felicia, who helped her navigate available resources. While pregnant around Thanksgiving, Kriana was connected to a holiday meal, easing both financial and emotional stress during a vulnerable time.

“I’ve never felt so included and cared for,” Kriana shares. “I thought people would be judgey, but not at all.”

She also received help accessing housing assistance and essential items for her children like diapers, toothpaste, and deodorant. While she typically shops at the Gatewood School Market and uses our K-Tel Market as a backup, the support goes far beyond groceries.

What stands out most to her is the kindness. “It helps me not feel insecure. Everyone needs help. It’s nice to feed my family and not feel bad about it.” ICA gave her something more than food security — it gave her confidence. Today, she openly tells others, “I go to the food shelf,” and has even recommended ICA to coworkers.

At ICA, Kriana found not just support, but belonging. “Thanks for being kind and caring. We need that in the world right now. This is a strong, secure, kind place to go.”
