Uplifting our Volunteers: Michele Barr
Since 2017, Michele Barr has been a consistent and uplifting presence at ICA, generously giving her time and energy to support neighbors facing food insecurity. After previously volunteering at other organizations in town, Michele was looking for a different way to serve and found a meaningful connection at ICA that has kept her coming back week after week.
Michele volunteers twice a week in foodlogistics, a role that is essential to the daily operation of the food shelf. Her work includes stocking shelves, sorting and packaging food, organizing supplies, receiving donations, and assisting clients with questions or special requests. She takes pride in creating a space where clients can find what they need with dignity. “I am so happy when the shelves are full for our clients,” Michele shares, knowing that full shelves bring both relief and reassurance to families in need.
What continues to motivate Michele is ICA’s mission and the opportunity to make a tangible difference. “I get personal satisfaction knowing that I am contributing to the community and helping others,” she says. That commitment to care has defined her life’s work.
After retiring last year following 39 years as a registered nurse, including 36 years at the University of Minnesota Hospital, Michele has carried her passion for helping others into this new chapter. Volunteering at ICA provides Michele with energy, purpose, and connection.
“Volunteering at ICA energizes me. I wake up with a purpose for the day”
The sense of community extends beyond her own experience. Michele even inspired her husband to volunteer alongside her, where he now helps with food logistics and emergency food bags.
Her message to clients is simple and heartfelt: “We see you and we are here to help.” Through her dedication and compassion, Michele embodies the impact that volunteers have at ICA every single day.
